There are lots of events coming up for learners and families at Orion High School, and this is your one-stop place for ensuring that you are caught up with opportunities to engage in cities and states across the country. We will continue to feature events for the summer, that give learners the opportunity to earn high school credit while experiencing university settings during the summer. We featuring University of Chicago in this issue, as well as Sam Houston State University. Learn more about these great opportunities!
Happening this Summer at the University of Chicago
UChicago sends you all greetings, and invites you to an academic opportunity for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The University of Chicago Summer Session programs draw from the interdisciplinary emphasis and intellectual richness of the undergraduate College curriculum. During Summer Session, students can explore a number of programs taught at the college level but designed exclusively for high school students. Those programs include:
- College Pathway Programs: Three week immersion courses in subjects such as Economics, Human Rights, Model United Nations, Molecular Engineering, and Neuroscience at UChicago. Each course features guest lectures by faculty members from across the university who specialize in the field. Learn what makes UChicago one of the most innovative universities in the world.
- UChicago Immersions: A selection of courses designed to provide high school students with an in-depth and hands-on learning at an undergraduate level in subjects such as developmental psychology, law, and biotechnology.
- Research in the Biological Sciences: Extensive training in laboratory research techniques and methods.
- Stones and Bones: Study geology and excavate fossils with Field Museum Distinguished Server curator Dr. Lance Grande at a site with 52-million-year old community of extinct organisms.
- Arts & Sciences Summer in Chicago: Team-taught interdisciplinary program focused on critical thinking and cultivating a multidisciplinary approach to answer big questions.
If you will be participating in any of these opportunities, you will also receive credit here at Orion High School - dual enrollment credit for any of the courses you take! This is a great way of garnering credit for 3-4 courses during the summer!

Criminal Justice Summer Camp at Sam Houston State University
Sam Houston State University, in Houston, TX is offering an opportunity for Orion learners to take advantage of a Criminal Justice Summer Camp. There are four camp sessions that learners may apply for, starting on June 10-14. The criteria:
- Ages 15-17 with an interest in criminal justice
- You'll gain hands on experience in Criminal Justice
- Meet law enforcement agents, professors, and other students who share your interest;
- Tour of jail and crime lab;
- Investigate a mock crime scene.
Orion High School participants will receive high school credit for Criminal Justice! The application deadline is March 30! Go here for more information.
SAT and ACT Dates
Don't forget to stay up with the remaining dates for the SAT and ACT, by going to the College Board site, and by registering for a free account. The registration dates are on a rolling schedule, and you can sign up for alerts there! Before you commit to the ACT or SAT, though, you should consult the Admissions section of the universities you are planning to apply for! There it will give you the information on SAT and/or ACT cut-off scores. For learners in Texas, don't forget that if you are graduating under Orion High School's 26 credits, you qualify for Automatic Admission to Texas universities!
