What does participation in Advanced Placement do for Orion High School learners?

Participation in AP goes beyond simply taking the course, although that's the most important component.  At OHS, learners receive a weighted grade when successfully completing the course.  Simply stated, a weighted grade in AP weighs 'more than' a regular grade in a regular course.  AP courses prepare OHS learners for college courses, and for the requirements that learners will face once in the university classroom.

Am I required to take the AP Exam?

Participation in the AP Examination (in May of each year) is voluntary, although, we recommend that learners completing AP courses do so. Success on the AP Examinations potentially leads to college credit in courses.  Learners should consult with their prospective university regarding the acceptance of these credits.

Orion's Course Rule for Advanced Placement

Orion's new rule, effective Fall 2015, for full time learners taking AP courses:  The Advanced Placement Course may only be taken by itself during the term.  No other course may be taken at the same time as the AP course.  New course(s) may be requested during the second month of the AP course, even if the learner requests an extension in the AP course.

If learners are unsuccessful during the first week of the AP Course, they will be dropped from the course.  Learners should consult with Dr. Gallegos or Dr. Marriott prior to requesting Advanced Placement Courses.  AP Courses will require substantial time daily (5 or more hours), and will require two meetings per week with the mentor (in addition to discussion assignments, papers, daily assignments, projects, etc.).

Can AP be taken as Credit Transfer?

Yes!  Students from other institutions may take Orion's AP Courses for Credit transfer.  Orion's AP Courses are being reviewed by Educational Testing Service (ETS) in order to have Orion placed on the list of approved online providers for schools across the country.  This approval has many benefits that will be discussed upon approval.

The price for AP Courses taken at Orion High School is $500.00 for credit transfer.

Although these courses are rigorous and challenging, learners should not shy away from the challenge.  Courses are available in all core disciplines.
