In business a little less than a year, a Midland-based online high school has added a middle school, a high school equivalency and leveling program for students who haven't passed the Exit TAKS test needed to graduate.
Sophia Valdez, an Orion High board member, student advisor and mentor trainer, said middle school courses will start in September. The idea was suggested by a group of homeschool parents talking to founder Joe Gallegos, former Ector County ISD deputy superintendent for Accountability, Curriculum and Instruction.
The high school has 30-35 students currently enrolled and more than 100 applicants. The school has seven mentors total. In the next two years, Gallegos said plans are to offer an associate degree, but it will involve more accreditation.
High school costs $1,000 per six courses, or 23 credits. The equivalency program is $500, the leveling diploma is $250 and middle school is $750 per grade.
