Orion Reading and Writing Proficiency Courses (5.0 Credits Required)
Orion requires five (4.0) credits of English Language Arts to graduate. Orion recognizes the need to provide learning in grammar and composition as a requisite for all other writing. The required credits are: Grammar & Composition; English I; English II; English III; and English IV. Please consult your Orion Advisor prior to enrolling in any English Language Arts courses at Orion.
English 4 concentrates on the real-world experience of communication. Modules begin with British Literature and move to modern use of literature through a marketing firm simulation in which a learner must use modern communication of academic ideas.
This course emphasizes three parts: literature, grammar, and composition. Reading and interpretation of the literature selections are frequently used as topics for composition. Students are required to apply their knowledge of basic rules of grammar and usage in the compositions.
Literary Analysis through Film introduces you to the ideas of the reasons for film such as story-telling, documentary, predicting, etc. It highlights the importance of the presentation of ideas through the 3-dimensional medium of film.
Learn to listen and evaluate speeches, participate actively in conversations, judge non-verbal cues, and present your thoughts formally using various media. You will learn to communicate effectively in current American culture.
This course allows students to write in a variety of forms - narrative, exploratory, expository, argumentative and on a variety of subjects from personal experiences to public policies and from imaginative literature to popular culture. The ultimate goal is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers.
How do writers evoke emotions within us as we read their work, or watch movies wherein their work is contained? This course explores writing through our perspective. We will read poetry, short stories, watch movies, while reflecting on how writers write with purpose. We will compile our own thoughts and will compose our own writing for a variety of purposes.
