Orion requires four (4.0) credits of mathematics for graduation. The required mathematics courses are: Algebra I; Algebra II; and Geometry. For the fourth credit, students choose from Pre-Calculus OR Personal Finance. Please visit with Orion Advising prior to selecting math courses.
Algebra I is a one credit course designed to enhance the ability to think and analyze solutions to problems as opposed to simply memorizing. Algebra I is an important foundation for students who plan to study more advanced math courses.
This course is the fourth math credit requirement for OHS learners. The main goal of this course is to help learners become financially literate today and into the future. The secondary goal of the course is to help learners identify and set personal and family financial goals into the future.
Pre-Calculus is an advanced course which extends the topics from Algebra II. The course emphasizes Trigonometry, Limits, and introductory calculus topics. All major areas covered in Algebra II are reinforced at a greater depth. The course is designed to encompass all those topics necessary to be successful in a college calculus course.
This course builds on the strong foundations laid in earlier mathematics. The course begins by building a strong foundation in numeracy, and quickly moves to solving linear equations. Learners create a strong foundation for Orion High School Algebra. The course is based on the National Standards for mathematics. Additional course information may be found in the OMS Handbooks for Parents and Learners.
Algebra II is a one credit mathematics course that will extend the concepts covered in Algebra I to include such topics as functions, complex numbers, conic sections, quadratic equations, and matrices and determinants. We recommend that students purchase a graphing calculator to use through some of the activities.
This course is designed to facilitate conceptual learning so that students think logically. Students will analyze, organize, and apply facts concerning figures composed of points, lines, and surfaces or combinations of these. The concepts learned in geometry are very important since they play a prominent part in industry, mechanics, physical sciences and advanced mathematics.
This course builds a solid foundation for learners, in order to prepare them for larger concepts in pre-Algebra (at the 8th grade level). Learners work with their mentor to create an understanding of mathematics based on the National Standards. Additional information is found in the OMS Handbook for Parents and Learners.
