Social Studies

Social Studies - 5 Credits Required

Economics

This course is a one semester course that provides opportunity to study basic principles concerning production, consumption and the distribution of good and services. Content builds an understanding of the components of the free enterprise system. Students study concepts such as supply and demand, the banking system, comparative economic systems and the national economy.

Government

This course provides an opportunity to study, in-depth, the foundation of the US political system, to analyze the political institutions, process and values of the system, to trace the development of the US government system, and to analyze the structure and functions of government on local, state and federal levels.

The Bible as Literature

This course examines the Bible in the following ways: • What literature is found in the Pentateuch or the Torah? • What literature is found in the Historical books or the Annals? • What literature is found in the Wisdom books? • What literature is found in the books by Prophets? o Major Prophets o Minor Prophets The Bible’s Beginnings • What stories are contained in the book of Genesis? • What purpose do the first 11 chapters have in Genesis? • What main story and what kinds of laws are found in Exodus? • What is the point of the book of Leviticus? • How is the book of the Second Law (Deuteronomy) different from the laws found in Exodus (the first law)? The Bible as literature is the emphasis throughout the course. For Orion Learners, this course satisfied the requirement for either English III or World History.

United States History

 US History follows two themes. One is following the evolution of the US government and its policies toward the people. The other is highlighting the development of American culture, its significant individuals, issues, and events from the Colonial period to the present.

World Geography

This course provides the opportunity to study the interaction of people and their physical environments in the major areas of the world. Students acquire an understanding of the physical setting of the earth, locate and study different land forms and regions of the world, and learn how people and geography impact each other.

World History

This course includes further study of the history and development of world cultures encountered in the earlier secondary social studies courses. Content includes the development of early civilization and other world regions from their early days to present. Students should be better able to understand world events that may arise in the present and in the future as a result of taking this course. An attempt is made to show the interrelationships of world events with stress on the way one period may influence a succeeding period.

Advanced Placement: US Government and Politics

The topic outline below summarizes the major content areas covered by the U.S. Government & Politics Exam. The multiple-choice portion of the exam is devoted to each content area in the approximate percentages indicated. The free-response portion of the exam will test students in some combination of the six major categories outlined below. The outline is a guide and is by no means an exhaustive list of topics or the preferred order of topics.

  1. Constitutional Underpinnings of United States Government (5-15%)
  2. Political Beliefs and Behaviors (10-20%)
  3. Political Parties, Interest Groups, and Mass Media (10-20%)
  4. Institutions of National Government: The Congress, the Presidency, the Bureaucracy, and the Federal Courts (35-45%)
  5. Public Policy (5-15%)
  6. Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (5-15%)
