Other Electives

Electives at OHSOrion High School offers learners choices.  For example, learners may take the Bible as Literature course to substitute it for World History or English III.  Please be sure to stay in contact with Learner Advising before taking elective courses.  Orion requires 21 particular courses.  After that, three of the following may count toward the remaining credits for graduation under the College Prep Diploma Program.


Personal Fitness and Health (required course):

Orion recognizes the need for learners to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Orion requires one (1.0) credit of Health & Wellness (combined course) for graduation. Please consult your Orion Advisor prior to enrolling in any Orion Health & Wellness course.

Career Studies :

This course assists learners on how to plan for, establish, and change careers. This course instructs learners in the process of deciding on a career and implementing career goals, values assessments, interests and skills in relationship to occupations. The course is made up of other strategies such as identification of employers and sources of occupation information including securing employment, proposals, resumes, applications, and job interviews.

Spanish II:

Spanish 2 immerses learners into more conventional/conversational Spanish.  The course builds on foundational knowledge from Spanish 1.  Learners are immeresed into practical applications of the language.

SAT Study Course:

This course prepares students to take the SAT examination.  Registration for the SAT follows completion of this course.

Speech Communication

Learn to listen and evaluate speeches, participate actively in conversations, judge non-verbal cues, and present your thoughts formally using various media. You will learn to communicate effectively in current American culture.

The Bible as Literature

This course examines the Bible in the following ways: • What literature is found in the Pentateuch or the Torah? • What literature is found in the Historical books or the Annals? • What literature is found in the Wisdom books? • What literature is found in the books by Prophets? o Major Prophets o Minor Prophets The Bible’s Beginnings • What stories are contained in the book of Genesis? • What purpose do the first 11 chapters have in Genesis? • What main story and what kinds of laws are found in Exodus? • What is the point of the book of Leviticus? • How is the book of the Second Law (Deuteronomy) different from the laws found in Exodus (the first law)? The Bible as literature is the emphasis throughout the course. For Orion Learners, this course satisfied the requirement for either English III or World History.
